It came as no surprise for Chisaki that Hikari found and brought back Manaka, because when she was a young child both Manaka and she were lost and Hikari found them. He led them back to Shioshishio without saying a word, with his face directed ahead. It was at that time that she began to love him. Manaka was checked out by Chisaki and a doctor: Chisaki looks good in her nurse uniform, but the uniform itself would look better on a chef than a nurse. There is nothing wrong with Manaka for her vitals were doing okay, she was breathing comfortably. The doctor suspects that she’ll wake up soon, given that her friends also woke up with the past two weeks.

As you would expect, Hikari is all smiles that Manaka is back. This creates a problem for Miuna, who was forced to take the backseat again to Manaka. Chisaki caught her staring at Hikari talking to Manaka when he was alone with her through the door. Her eyes gave away her feeling to Chisaki; she knows those eyes and with the same look in her eyes often times watched Hikari also.

So we’re finally on the eighteenth episode of this show and it’s been good so far. I thought this episode was slow, but it had a lot of good meat in it, especially for Miuna’s character development. Other than for Miuna and a little for Hikari, the episode didn’t have a whole lot there, so forgive me if I forget to mention something. I probably left it out on purpose and not on accident like usual because that thing or scene didn’t have a particular strong influence on the episode.

So they (Hikari, Miuna, and Kaname) arrived in Shioshishio after following the strange sound that Miuna heard. The underwater city holds a special meaning to each of them, but for Miuna who’s never seen Shioshishio, the reality and her vision of the city don’t line up at all. The city is covered in thin one inch or less layer of sea salt. Everyone is asleep hibernating in their houses out in other places. Uroko told everyone to relax at home while they hibernate, but a few rebellious older citizens wanted to keep watch and went to sleep sitting in a chair. When they wake up, I bet their back is going to be in so much pain.

Hikari learned about Kaname’s awakening moments after he (Kaname) approached the cafe guy and asked what year it was. Akari took Miuna and Hikari to see Kaname at the fishery where he’s being questioned by the scientist regarding Shioshishio. You can imagine the look of sheer joy on Hikari’s and Kaname’s faces when they saw each other. Chisaki arrived a minute or two after Hikari with Tsumugu. Kaname was shocked to see them together, but he recovered quickly as he always does. He is a smooth character.

The cracking sound like sand rubbing against broken glass that Miuna heard when she fell into the ocean in the previous episode was also heard by Kaname right after he woke up. Akari was naturally very worried about Miuna when she heard that she fell into the ocean, but they told Akari that Miuna can swim now and that she has an Ena. This happened later in the episode, but the scientist and Tsumugu ran some checks on Miuna’s skin and found out that she really has an Ena, though still not quite fully matured.

It was impractical that Hikari should not graduate from high school (or middle as the case may be) so he enrolled back to school days after waking up. As chance would have it, he ended back under the same teacher’s guidance, along with Miuna and Sayu in the same class. He loves being technically the oldest person in the class and he made his classmates call him their senior. I love how Sayu still loves to call him octopus when he gets on her nerves, like an affectionate nickname for the Sea People.

The boy who confessed to Miuna two episodes back realized with a pang of jealousy that Miuna is in love with her step-uncle, Hikari. H first noticed it from the way she would stare at him, but his suspicions were confirmed after school of the first day back when Miuna was crimson after touching Hikari — he pulled her to safety from a speeding car whose driver is out of control.

Hikari is the first one that woke up from the hibernation. He was quickly taken to Akari’s house by Tsumugu’s professor and a doctor. It is a house this time; Akari and Itaru took out a loan on it for their growing family. Tsumugu told Chisaki immediately that Hikari woke up. She turned to stone and her breath was caught up in her throat. Her worst fear is actually going to happen, but I’ll get more into that later.

Hikari couldn’t sleep after being brought to Akari’s house. It didn’t help that Akira and Miuna were looking at him through a crack between door and wall. He now knows what it feels like being a monster that common folk gap at in wonder and shock. It’s hard to take all of this in. Miuna is the same age as he is now, 14 years old. Akari has a kid and she let her hair grow out. But he’s still the same on the inside and the outside. For him the Ofunehiki happened a few hours ago.

Five years have passed since the first half and the second. We know they’re 20 years old now because a few friends are returning to their village for the Coming of Age ceremony, which takes place three times, two early in life and the final time when a person reaches 20 years. The first episode back into the wonderful world of NnA is more of the characters still around telling us what transpired between then and now so please forgive me for choosing to summarize this episode by taking each character in turn and telling what happened in their memories.

Chisaki is first and she is the last member of the original four friends still around. After the incident when Akari was married, when Manaka jumped into the ocean to save Akari and offered herself in akari’s place to be the Sea God’s bride and Hikari helped save his sister, after Chisaki jumped into the ocean to save Tsumugu who fell in, and after Kaname was thrown from the boat back into the water, she was alone. Chisaki was the only person from Shioshishio that was planning to go into hibernation (official story at least), but the ocean froze over after the incident and she couldn’t return home.

NnA is a love story, don’t allow the racial prejudice fool you. Whether the love is marriage, between classmates, between friends, parental love, even between little kids and middle school students, love is the at the heart of this story. The love of this show is pure like fresh snow on the peak of a mountain. For many characters, they are in the midst of their first love and all the awkwardness that comes with being in love for the first time. They are unsure even of their feelings which adds to the confusion and sometimes this puts too much strain on the core friends’ friendship.

The city of Shioshishio lies under water just offshore from the mainland. The city is not growing as it used to, because their children looked upon the land dwellers and most of them got married. Ena is a special substance in the skin of all the sea dwellers that enables them to breath under water and another added bonus is that the Ena quickly dries their clothes after coming out of the water. Children born of the land and sea people don’t have Ena, but they do have the sparkling light blue hue in their eyes like sea dwellers have.
